Since water softeners are banned at a few places (Riverside, Santa Clarita, etc.) due to high chloride discharge to its sewer system. The discharge of salt brines from the regeneration of water softeners into the wastewater collection system has a negative impact on recycled water and wastewater effluent. Higher salinity increases the treatment costs and reduces the potential for reuse of wastewater for non-potable irrigation and industrial purposes. There are a few no-salt anti-scale systems appeared in the market for calcium control. These typically (not all) are:
1. Filtersorb SP3 Anti-Scale Media & Nano-Technology:
-
Manufactured by Watch Water Germany
-
Approximately 5-year Service Life

3. Magnetic and Electric Systems:
-
Relatively new inventions. The Concept is that as water passes through a magnetic field or electric field, the calcium and magnesium ions are altered in such a way they loose their ability to cause scale.
-
According to this page, they are not quite effective

4. Polyphosphate:
-
The polyphosphate dissolves into water and coats the iron, calcium and magnesium in it, making it difficult for these agents to precipitate out of water and create problems associated with hard water.
-
Good for tankless water heater, save space.
